ALSO no skipping dates. if there is no data, u put 0.\" So the series is DAILY NEW, not running totals, and every date from the first to today is present.",

    "updated": "2026-10-06",
    "_READ_THIS_FIRST": "THE HISTORY IS DAILY NEW, NOT CUMULATIVE. A row's deaths/cases/pending are what was NEWLY reported on that date. \"deaths\": 0 means no new death was reported that day. It does NOT mean the death toll is zero. The headline figures in each country's `figures` block are the COLUMN SUMS of its history, which is why Russia reads deaths 1, 0, 0, 0, 0 with a headline of 1. Read a zero as cumulative and you will read this file as saying a death was undone, which is the opposite of what it says.",
    "note": "A per-country view of figures that already exist in data.json. It is not a second record and it is not a world count: a country appears here only once a named source has stated a figure for it. The history is daily new, not a running total, so each row counts what was newly reported on that date and each metric's rows sum to its headline figure. A zero means no new death, case or contact admission was reported on that date, which is a statement about the record rather than a figure taken from a source, so a zero carries no citation and needs none. Dates do not skip between the first and last recorded rows; the series may trail behind today, and that gap is not filled automatically. A non-zero is a figure somebody stated, so it still carries its source and the build still refuses it without one. Every source id below is a data.json publication string character for character, because data.json sources[] carry no id field and the scheduled updater rewrites that file twice a day, so renaming a publication there breaks the citations here and the build stops rather than dropping them.",
    "_sourceIds": "data.json records provenance as prose and its sources[] carry no id field, so a source id here IS the exact `publication` string from data.json sources[], character for character. That is the only value in data.json that identifies a source, and build.mjs already keys its citation index on it, so an id typed here resolves to the same numbered reference the sources page shows. If data.json ever gains real id fields, this file has to be remapped in the same commit.",
    "_noFutureDates": "The last row is 2026-10-06 because today is 2026-10-06. There is deliberately no 2026-10-07 row: a row for a date that has not happened asserts nothing was reported on a day nobody has lived through yet, and the build refuses any date after data.json's meta.updated. The no-gaps rule applies BETWEEN the first and last recorded dates, not up to today, so the series trailing behind today is allowed and is not a fault. A trailing gap honestly says the record has not been extended. An all-zero row appended by a job that found nothing is indistinguishable from one appended by a job whose searches failed, so nothing fills the trailing gap automatically."

Each one must equal the SUM of its history row, which is what makes the chart and the headline the same claim. One caveat worth knowing: deaths and cases are events, so a daily-new series and a cumulative total agree by construction. `pending` is a standing count of people under observation, so its sum is cumulative admissions. The two coincide at 189 only because nobody has been recorded as released; see the 2026-10-06 note.",

A zero is not an absence of data, it is the record saying nothing new was reported that day, so it needs no source. A non-zero is somebody's stated figure and must name them. Sources are still listed on zero rows where a named source spoke that day, because that is provenance about the record even when no figure moved.",
